With UK Info Disk Version 7 you can track down almost any person or business in the UK. Type in a name, pick a locality and click search: the results are displayed in a flash. Businesses can also be searched by name or type. It beats hunting through telephone directories or calling directory enquiries, and you can use the clipboard to prevent typing errors when transferring names to your favourite contact manager. As a bonus, there is a route planner which will work out driving instructions between any two postcodes.

UK Info is a fantastic resource, but it is important to be realistic. The database is from the 2001 electoral roll together with directory information from BT and business information supplied by Dun & Bradstreet. It gives no details except name, address and telephone number, unless ex-directory. The user interface is a bit rough and ready, there is no support for printing and there is a limit of 100 directory enquiry searches, although there is no restriction on the electoral roll data. Another limitation is that you cannot obtain addresses by looking up telephone numbers. Still, there is a phenomenal amount of data here.

This is also a fascinating research tool: for example, you can find out how many people have a particular surname and where they live, which could be handy for those putting together a family tree. There is also a UK Info Disk Pro version allowing up to 1000 directory enquiries, and an UK Info Disk Business edition with extra business data and features. --Tim Anderson
